‘It defies the logic,’ says Thierry Henry on trophy-laden potential Liverpool manager

Thierry Henry believes Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi defies logic amid speculation linking him to the Liverpool job.

After Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of stepping down at the end of the season, Liverpool is actively seeking a new boss. Several names, including Inzaghi’s, have emerged as potential targets for the position.

Thierry Henry has described Simone Inzaghi, who is linked with the Liverpool job, as a “genius.”

Simone Inzaghi has achieved remarkable success at Inter Milan.

In his debut season, the 47-year-old guided his team to a commendable second-place finish, just two points behind AC Milan, the eventual winners.

Additionally, Inter reached the final of the Champions League last season. Currently, they dominate the Serie A table, sitting 16 points ahead of second-placed AC Milan.

With Inzaghi poised to secure the league title this season, it’s highly likely that Liverpool’s interest in appointing him as Jurgen Klopp’s successor stems from his impressive track record of success.

Thierry Henry expressed his admiration for Inzaghi during his appearance on CBS Sports last night, indicating his strong support for the Inter Milan manager.

He said: “Yes, I am (fond of his system). They quite often say that strikers cannot be good managers. Well, it defies the logic at the moment because the way he is setting up his team is second to none.

“He was known as a cup coach, but now, he’s going to win the league, we know that.”

Henry proceeded to analyze some of Inzaghi’s tactics at Inter Milan, providing captivating insights. One particular observation he made was about the Italian’s utilization of defenders. That stood out and was intriguing to us.

He said: “This is something that they didn’t do so much this year. I had to go back to a goal that they scored last year against Roma. Wing-back to wing-back – we’ve seen this before, Conte did it, they’re doing it.

“But, there’s something that I’ve never seen before. At the weekend, I never saw that before, look at the shape of their back-five.”

Henry presented a clip illustrating how Inter Milan’s two center-backs adopt an advanced and wide positioning, resembling wingers, while their wing-backs occupy a high and central position, aligning with the opponent’s defense. He then demonstrated how one center-back supported another in scoring a goal.

“I’ve never seen, in open play, at 0-0, away, the left centre-back crossing the ball to the right centre-back to score a goal. In my life, I’ve never seen that. This guy, Inzaghi, he’s a genius!”

Inzaghi is a world-class manager

Simone Inzaghi holds the record for the most trophies lifted by a coach in Inter’s history across all competitions since the 1929/30 season.

The Piacenza-born coach has claimed victory in three Supercoppa Italiana finals and two Coppa Italia finals, surpassing the achievements of Helenio Herrera and Roberto Mancini, both of whom have won four trophies.

Despite Inter Milan’s elimination from the Champions League last night, it doesn’t diminish Simone Inzaghi’s coaching prowess.

The 47-year-old’s remarkable work at the San Siro since taking over as manager speaks for itself. He has the most wins (179) in the first 300 Serie A matches, suppressing records by Carlo Ancelloti (172) and Massimiliano Allergri (171).

His team’s dominance in Serie A this season has been impressive, earning him admiration from many, including Thierry Henry.

Reportedly, Inzaghi is being considered by Liverpool. He would bring a different managerial style compared to Jurgen Klopp, particularly in terms of philosophy.

However, if Liverpool can embrace this difference, his appointment could be a fascinating move.

Reds, what do you think? Do you agree with Thierry Henry? Is he the best Klopp replacement?
